NAEPP EPR-3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma

The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) released new Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma in 2007 (Full Report, Summary Report, and Guideline Implementation Report).  Key guideline recommendations for all patients with asthma include:

  • See your health care provider for planned visits every 1-6 months to monitor asthma control.
  • Have a current asthma action plan to guide asthma self-management, including when to use quick-relief and prevention (control) medications.
  • Work with your health care provider to identify and avoid exposures to your individual asthma triggers.

In an effort to support health care providers in the optimal diagnosis and management of asthma, the California Asthma Public Health Initiative (CAPHI) has produced a new resource entitled “Summary of the NAEPP’s EPR-3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma.”  This summary of the new guidelines is designed to assist the clinician in the diagnosis and management of asthma and has been reviewed and approved by health care providers in CAPHI’s Improving Asthma Control Collaborative and by national asthma experts.  This resource was adapted from the Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative (www.coloradoguidelines.org/guidelines/asthma.asp)
